a5c7b9f00b Jim Phelps is the head of a super-secret government agency, the IMF (Impossible Missions Force), and is often given secret anonymous covert missions to attempt. Quite often, they are unmasking criminals or rescuing hostages. He picks his team depending on which tasks need to be done. One thing is vital on an Impossible Mission: the mission must be carried out in entire secrecy, often relying on high-tech equipment and elaborate deceptions.
The IMF (Impossible Missions Force) is an elite force of Agents who are given orders by tape and are asked to do jobs that are considered impossible by any other known means. The art of the con is used time and time again, and the Agents use technology, drugs, and plain greed to achieve their goals.
I was in college in 1966 when "Mission Impossible" came onto TV and it was a very popular series. Along with "Batman and Robin" and "Laugh In", it was one of the weekly shows we all put into our study schedules. The DVDs now out are very nice, with good colors and very sharp video transfers. The soundtrack is even selectable as the original mono, or a 5.1 surround mix. My public library has the DVDs now and I am re-watching some of these old episodes.

Clearly, the memory of how sophisticated the show was is better than the show itself. The sets and characters are a bit cheesy, as were most shows in the 1960s, and the IM group pulling off the impossible mission are not as slick as I remember them.

Still, those of us who enjoyed the original series will get a big kick out of seeing some of these episodes again, being quite different from the Mission Impossible movies of recent years. Also, younger fans of the movies will get a kick seeing the original TV series.
Having just finished viewing the boxed DVD set of the second season, I can hardly wait to see the next offering. The Town seemed to be as good on second viewing as it was when it first was aired. I'm especially anxious to see season three, which probably was the best of the series. Unfortunately it was the last year Martin Landau and Barbara Bain were with the show. I remember thinking at the time they left that they would never be able to replace them. In my opinion, they never did, even though I remained an IMF addict until it went off the air.

Watergate was the death knell of the show. Nixon's plumbers' antics struck a little bit too close to home. By the final season, I think the plots had become a bit tired.

As far as I know, the murder of the show's producer, Barry Crane, has never been solved. I was a tournament bridge player at the time the show was on the air, and he was rated the top bridge player in the country. I met him when the ACBL Summer Nationals were played in Minneapolis. Crane was a very fine person. At the time, there was speculation that the LA police didn't try as hard as they could to solve his murder because he was gay. If anyone has ever heard anything more about the case, I would like to hear about it.

It's hard to believe that the two finest TV series of the sixties were both from Desilu. Star Trek and Mission Impossible were the two benchmarks that have never been surpassed. And how can anyone of my generation not get a lump in his/her throat to see the wonderful limo-sized gas guzzlers that showed up in the show?
